Batavia U.S. Post Office

106 W. Wilson Street Batavia , IL 60510
The Batavia U.S. Post Office was constructed in 1918 and opened in 1919. Previously, the post office was located on the first floor of 6 W. Wilson Street. This much larger building accommodated higher postal traffic in the growing municipality of Batavia. In the 1918 Lincoln Highway Association Road Guide, the Batavia Post Office is listed as an Odometer Control Station. It provided tourist and travel information, including Lincoln Highway guidebooks. It was also a point where drivers set their odometers to zero to keep track of their distances from the last point to the next. This was helpful in a time before the highway was formally marked in 1928.
