Bonded Service Station

319 W. Everett Street Dixon, IL 61021
This former Bonded Service Station was constructed in 1939 for owner Joseph J. Gillen. The Bonded Oil Co. was a Springfield, Ohio-based company known for insuring each purchase made at its stations with a $5,000 bond. This station sold gasoline, auto fluids, radiators, and cigarettes. It was managed by mechanic Budd Carr. During World War II, shortages of supplies were present across all sectors of the economy. The automotive industry was not exempt, and shortages of gasoline, auto parts, and automotive fluids were widespread. In a November 1941 advertisement for this Bonded station in Dixon, they touted a large supply of anti-freeze fluid due to the foresight of the owner, who had stocked up 1,000 gallons in the previous season. However, by 1942, the business was sold to Hicks Oils and continued to be managed by Budd Carr. Three years later, it was purchased by Mac's Oil, which later became Mac's Zephyr Service Station. Today, it is occupied by Russ's Automotive Service, a full automotive service and towing company.
