Campana Factory

901 N. Batavia Avenue Batavia , IL 60510
Constructed in 1936, the Campana Factory is a Streamline Moderne, Bauhaus-style building designed by Frank D. Chase of Childs and Smith Architects. The company manufactured products such as Campana Italian Balm, Ayds, Bantron, and Doan's Pills. Campana was acquired by Purex of Dow Chemical in 1962, and by 1980, the company had ceased using the facility. The building is an incredible example of the 1930s-era Modern Movement. The exterior is predominantly composed of glass block, juxtaposed against cream brick, which clads the spandrel panels and 100-foot-tall central entrance and water tower. The tower houses a 50,000-gallon water tank used for both fire suppression and air conditioning. Bands of mint green glazed brick further accentuate the exterior. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 for its association with Batavia's industrial heritage and architectural legacy.
