Shortly after the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad built its line through Will County in 1852, New Lenox founder H.N. Dickinson built a general store (pictured), a grain elevator (extant, 125 Lincoln Highway), and a building supply business. The general store sold food, household goods, and personal items, and also served as the post office. Over the last 170 years, the building has continued to serve the community as a grocer, hardware store, law office, and insurance agency. In 1918, the Lincoln Highway Association designated this building as the New Lenox Control Station, a landmark used to measure distances between locations. The building was designated a Will County Historic Landmark in 2009.
