Downtown Malta

3rd Street from Washington to Jefferson Streets Malta , IL 60150
The Village of Malta was founded in 1851 by farmer Ezekiel Whitehead. By 1854, the railroad came through town and established a station at Malta. The community became an agricultural hub that prospered from wide open prairie land and the presence of the train for shipping harvests. In 1860, McCrea & Johnson constructed a grain elevator in Malta. This elevator burned down in 1921 and was rebuilt by owner George F. Ollmann. The new elevator is the one present in the downtown today. It is a concrete elevator with a capacity of 30,000 bushels. Today, it is used for soybean processing. Other downtown points of interest include the historic commercial center, the Remington Gastropub, and the Malta Historical and Genealogical Society.
