Downtown Morrison

Various Morrison, IL 61270
Downtown Morrison is situated on the historic Main Street corridor through the city, which runs perpendicular to the historic Lincoln Highway. The corridor is most notable for its retention of historic buildings that indicate the evolution of Morrison from a railroad grain shipment stop to a vibrant commercial center in the mid-twentieth century. Many of the historic buildings date between 1870 and 1895. The overarching architectural style is Italianate, characterized by wooden brackets, ornate punched metal cornices, and elaborate window hoods. The district also includes examples of Romanesque Revival, Commercial Vernacular, Classical Revival, Streamlined Classicism, and Modernism. Evidence of the Lincoln Highway's economic boost to the community can also be seen in the historic built environment. Many of the buildings facing Main Street were extended with rear additions that were accessible from the Lincoln Highway. Furthermore, numerous automobile-related enterprises, hotels, restaurants, and boutiques emerged to cater to tourists. While on Main Street, make sure to also check out a Lincoln Highway marker nestled in a planter at the Morrison Municipal Building. This concrete marker was originally installed along the highway in 1928 by local Boy Scouts. It features a bronze medallion with a profile of Abraham Lincoln, along with the Lincoln Highway "L" logo. The Morrison Main Street Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
