Ferd's Motor Sales

15303 US Route 30 Plainfield, IL 60544
Constructed in c. 1925, this automobile agency and service station was owned by Ferdinand Klomhaus. In the 1940s, Ferdinand retired and passed the business on to his children. Ferdinand Klomhaus II managed the auto sales side of the business, while his sister, Ella, operated a lunch counter restaurant next door. Together, the siblings operated the gas station portion of the business. In 1946, the local Teamsters union, Local 179, picketed outside the business, cutting off its supply of gasoline, food deliveries, and auto parts, effectively shuttering the business. The union's reasoning for picketing was to insist that filling station operators join the union. The Klomhauses claimed they were not eligible because they had ownership in the business, rather than being employed by it. They sold the business to the Texas Company, now known as Texaco, in September of 1946. However, the business retained the name Ferd's Motor Sales until c. 1963, when it was purchased by Rod Baker Ford, auto sales.
