Located just west of DeKalb, along the Lincoln Highway, is the site of the first breeding plot for the DeKalb Brand Hybrid Corn. The history of the site dates back to 1925 when farmers Charlie Gunn and Tom Roberts developed a corn seed breeding program on J. J. Kingsley's Farm. Together, they developed a hybrid corn known for abundant production, with a 35% yield increase over other breeds. In addition, the development of this hybrid raised the corn plant's hardiness zone 200 miles northward. The innovation helped to transform the significant agricultural economy of Illinois, the nation, and the world. In 2014, the existing plaque was dedicated by the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association and the Illinois State Historical Society to commemorate this achievement.
