Garfield Farm

Garfield Road just north of IL Route 38 La Fox, IL 60147
Garfield Farm, founded in the 1840s by Timothy Powers Garfield and his wife Harriet, is a Kane County landmark that preserves the legacy of America’s prairie farms. Originally opened as an inn on the Galena-Chicago stagecoach route, the site became a lively community hub, hosting travelers, meetings, and spirited Independence Day dances in its Federal-style brick tavern built in 1846. After the arrival of railroads ended its innkeeping era, the Garfields continued farming, recording their experiences in family diaries. In 1977, the land was donated by Elva Ruth Garfield for preservation, leading to its restoration by the Garfield Heritage Society. Today, the 366-acre site operates as a museum that blends 150 years of farming history with the region’s natural heritage. Both the Garfield Farm and Tavern and the later Edward Everett Garfield–Mongerson Brothers Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
