Johnson's Mound is a topographical feature and glacial kame that supports dry-mesic and mesic upland forests, rising 200 feet above the gently rolling prairie below. The kame is predominantly conical but undulates with shallow ravines and secondary knolls covered in dense woodlands composed of Sugar Maples, White Ash, Slippery Elm, and Basswood. The 185-acre site is managed by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. It is open to the public, who can hike several trails or drive up the mound on a beautiful, meandering road that ascends the ancient land.
