Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, the LaSalle Street Auto Row Historic District in Aurora is significant both as an early hub for automobile commerce and for its Victorian-era commercial architecture. Situated on a former stretch of the Lincoln Highway, the district was ideal for auto-oriented businesses in the early 20th century. Notable buildings include Coats Garage, built in 1907 as the first auto sales and service facility in the area, complete with three showroom floors and an early freight elevator. It once featured a Lincoln Highway odometer control sign, where travelers reset their mileage between checkpoints. Nearby, Theiss’ Central Garage, built in 1911, originally sold Maxwell cars before expanding to Apperson, Baker electric, and Buick models. Today, Coats Garage houses Bureau Gravity, a marketing and design firm that also offers workspaces to small businesses.
