One of two Lincoln Highway murals in Crest Hill, this one depicts the momentous use of the Lincoln Highway during the 1919 Transcontinental Motor Convoy. This was the first occasion on which the military was able to maneuver large vehicles across the entire country. One of the participants, the young Dwight D. Eisenhower, was inspired by the journey and the importance of improved roads. He is credited with the development of the Interstate Highway System in the United States during his Presidency (1953-1961). The mural was completed in 2012 as part of a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration with support from the City of Crest Hill. The Lincoln Highway Murals mark the Illinois section of the highway, which is the only portion of the Lincoln Highway to be designated a National Scenic Byway in its entirety. The mural was created by Shaw Craft Sign Co., founded by artist Jay Allen.
