This Lincoln Highway Mural in downtown Rochelle features the story of Emily Post on the Lincoln Highway. Emily Post is best known for her books on etiquette and the Emily Post Institute. However, before her career in etiquette education, she was a children's book author and non-fiction writer. In 1915, she took a journey across the country, meeting up with the nascent Lincoln Highway in Illinois. When passing through Rochelle, her automobile was overcome by mud because the highway had not yet been paved. She was forced to stay in Rochelle until the mud dried up. Her account in "By Motor to the Golden Gate" highlighted the experience in a chapter called "MUD!" The mural was completed in 2011 as part of a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration with support from the City of Rochelle. The Lincoln Highway Murals mark the Illinois section of the highway, which is the only portion of the Lincoln Highway designated a National Scenic Byway in its entirety. The mural was created by Shaw Craft Sign Co., founded by artist Jay Allen.
