Crest Hill’s second Lincoln Highway mural, completed in 2012, honors the trailblazing women who shaped the history and promotion of the highway. It highlights Alice Ramsey, who in 1909 became the first woman to drive across the continent during a grueling 59-day journey from New York to San Francisco, and actress Anita King, who in 1915 captivated the nation by completing a solo cross-country trip on the Lincoln Highway despite widespread doubt. Funded by a National Scenic Byway Grant with support from the City of Crest Hill, the mural was created by Shaw Craft Sign Co., founded by artist Jay Allen, and celebrates the Illinois section of the Lincoln Highway—the only portion fully designated a National Scenic Byway.
