Lincoln Highway Mural - Batavia

109 S. Batavia Avenue Batavia, IL 60510
The Batavia Lincoln Highway mural depicts the history of the highway in relation to inter-city transit. Before the highway, Batavia had an extensive streetcar system; however, with the introduction of the automobile and improved roads, such as the Lincoln Highway, the streetcar became obsolete. Since that time, the automobile has been the preferred form of transportation in the downtown area of Batavia. Completed in 2012 as part of a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration with support from the City of Batavia. The Lincoln Highway Murals mark the Illinois section of the highway, which is the only portion of the Lincoln Highway designated a National Scenic Byway in its entirety. The mural was created by Shaw Craft Sign Co., founded by artist Jay Allen.
