Located on the campus of Kishwaukee College is the Malta Seedling Mile Marker. Before 1914, the small community of Malta was plagued with poor roads that were often muddy or dusty and filled with major potholes. Following the spirit of the new Lincoln Highway project, the community came together to fund and construct a "seedling mile" of concrete road along the Lincoln Highway's route. Adjacent to the marker is the Lincoln Highway gazebo for Malta. It features interpretive panels detailing the history of the Seedling Mile, a general overview of the Lincoln Highway, and the impact of "good roads" on rural communities in Illinois. The gazebo was constructed in 2009 as part of the Interpretive Gazebo Project, funded through a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration, with support from the Village of Malta and Kishwaukee College. The Lincoln Highway Gazebos mark the Illinois section of the highway, which is the only portion of the Lincoln Highway to be designated a National Scenic Byway in its entirety.
