Midway Drive-In

91 Palmyra Road Sterling , IL 61081
The Midway Drive-in was constructed in 1950 in the rural community of Prairieville. It is one of the few remaining historic drive-in movie theaters in Northern Illinois. The massive, 90-foot-wide, red metal movie screen stands out as an anomaly in the pastoral landscape. A futuristic Googie-style ticket booth marks the main entrance to the drive-in from Palmyra Road. Drive-in movies were very popular between 1945 and 1970 for families, teenagers, older adults, and everyone in between. The Midway Theater historically allowed children in for free, and encouraged people to "Save the cost of a babysitter...bring the kiddies!" Some of the first pictures shown at the theater were Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm, Judy Garland's Summer Stock, and Fred Astaire's Royal Wedding. Today, the theater is still in operation on a seasonal basis. Check out their website to see which movies are showing!
