Mullie's Shell

710 E. LincolnHighway DeKalb , IL 60115
Mullie's Service Station originally offered Shell products, complete road service, and six pumps. Mullie's moved to this location in 1963, from its former station at 4th and Culver streets, to be more centrally located. Shell introduced this "Ranch-style" gas station in 1960. These stations replaced another type, known as the "Oblong Box," sometimes referred to as the "Ice Box," which was characterized by its shiny plastic and metal surfaces, flat roofs, and metallic features. The "Ranch-style" promoted the use of natural materials to blend into a suburban landscape. Often, the "Ranch-style" was added to "Oblong Box" with additions known as "top hatting" or "facelifting." The renovated buildings were called "blend-ins."
