Original Bridge over Franklin Creek and Pavement

The original route over Franklin Creek on the Lincoln Highway is no longer in use. However, this site retains an original section of the Lincoln Highway roadway. As part of the re-routing of the Lincoln Highway in the 1920s to create a more direct route, the roadway was routed to follow Franklin Road to Gap Road. Historically, Franklin Road (Lincoln Highway) continued approximately 730 feet on a northwest-southeast axis. The original route then required a sharp left turn to head approximately 530 feet south, meeting Gap Road. The sharp left turn, coupled with the crossing of Franklin Creek in this location, presented a significant hazard for motorists, resulting in the realignment of the highway in this area. The original alignment is still visible in Google Earth. The bridge on site is the older bridge formerly located at the crossing over Franklin Creek at the location of the existing 1958 bridge, mentioned in the previous Guide Map site.
