Peter Hohenadel, Jr. Canning Co.

151 N. 15th Street Rochelle, IL 61068
In 1903, the Peter Hohenadel Canning Co. was established in Rochelle. Hohenadel grew vegetables and processed them for canning. In 1912, Peter passed away and left the plant to George Stocking, a wealthy man and major landowner in Rochelle. He established Rochelle Asparagus, a farm and canning operation. During World War II, as a high percentage of Rochelle's male population was enlisted in the military, Rochelle Asparagus became almost exclusively operated by female employees. This provided the women of Ogle and Lee counties with jobs outside the home, as they supported their families and communities during the war effort. Today, the property is owned by Silgan Containers, metal can manufacturer.
