Pure Oil Service Station

502 W. State Street Geneva , IL 60134
As automobile travel surged in the 1920s, Geneva’s State Street developed into a bustling corridor catering to motorists, with numerous service facilities emerging along the route. Among them was the Pure Oil Service Station, built in 1937 by contractor August Wilson. Designed in the charming English Cottage (Tudor Revival) style typical of Pure Oil stations before World War II, it reflected the era’s preference for roadside architecture with character. Post-war trends shifted toward modern designs, but the building endured, later finding new life in 2013 as a drive-up banking facility for Geneva Bank & Trust. The bank even restored its vintage appeal by acquiring an original Pure Oil sign from a Virginia farm field.
