Texaco Service Station

SW corner of Des Plaines Street and Lockport Street (Lincoln Highway) Plainfield , IL 60544
Constructed in 1928 by James E. Newkirk, the original gas station comprises the eastern section of the existing building. The building reflects a standardized "house and canopy" plan. This plan is defined by a small, square floor plan crowned by a cross-gabled roof form that extends from the main footprint to prevent a covered area over the gas pumps. After 1932, the station was operated as Overman's Certified Texaco Station, then as Allen Hall's Texaco from 1956 to 1962, and later as the Welco Gas port until 1984, when it closed. In 1984, the Andreasen family purchased, enlarged, and remodeled the former gas station to create the existing U-shaped footprint. That same year, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2004, the family restored many of the character-defining features of the former gas station. Today, the building is known as "The Courtyard" and features three storefronts at the heart of Downtown Plainfield.
