The Ashton Garage

705 Main Street Ashton , IL 61006
The Ashton Garage was constructed circa 1910 and was operated by Faust H. Boyd. Interested in cars early in his career, Boyd was a member of the Lee County Transcontinental Highway Association in 1912. The group was dedicated to marking (or creating signs for) the route that would one day become the Lincoln Highway through Lee County. With a paint bucket and brush, he traveled the route and marked posts with a white "T" for transcontinental. Boyd was also a member of the Illinois Garage Association. The garage features a bow truss roof and walls constructed of concrete blocks. This type of roof allows for wide, unobstructed interiors, perfect for storing automobiles. The current facade of vinyl and brick veneer is not original and was added in the early 2000s. According to the 1932 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map and into the mid-twentieth century, the garage also housed the local fire department.
