Traveling the Plank Road Sculpture

NE Corner of Ingalls Avenue and U.S. Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) Joliet, IL 60435
This sculpture of a man with a horse on a mosaic-clad pedestal is located at the intersection of Plainfield Road and Ingalls Avenue. The design of the sculpture pays homage to the unique bond between humans and their horses. Throughout history, the horse has supported every aspect of our economy, from pulling stagecoaches and wagons during the Westward Expansion to supplying the power to turn grindstones that milled grain into flour, plowing the soil for farmers to grow food, and then transporting those products into our communities. The sculpture is composed of cold-cast bronzed resin by members of the non-profit group Friends of Community Public Art. Between 1998 and 2009, the city of Joliet commissioned the group to create 40 outdoor sculptures. The works were co-created by Kathleen Scarboro, Kathleen Farrell, Dante DeBartolo, Sharka Glet, Ron Swanson, Andrea Rountree, and Saul Chavira.
